What is Reiki?

Reiki is a natural, holistic non-invasive stress reduction system used by the Tibetan monks 2,500 years ago. The word Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. Rei meaning universal, present everywhere and Ki the non physical force, which gives life to all living things.

Where did it come from?

Mikao Usui re-discovered Reiki in the 19th century. He spent many years studying, reading and traveling trying to find out more about this ancient system.

He found the theory behind the system in old Sanskrit writings, but the application methods were not shown. After spending some time considering the information Mikao Usui realised how universal life energy, as described in the ancient writings, could be used to provide this beneficial technique.

Before Dr Usui died in the 1930's he initiated 16 other people into Reiki. This enabled Reiki to be taught and practiced worldwide.

Although Reiki has a background related to Buddhism, there is no creed, dogma or religion attached to it. Reiki does however recognise the Buddhist principles of valuing and respecting all creatures and the environment as a whole. Reiki recognises no boundaries and is open to all.

The increasing popularity of Reiki is a good indication of the large number of people who have already found benefit from this gentle, peaceful, relaxing therapy. All living things can benefit from Reiki. Humans, dogs, cats, horses and even plants.

What happens in a treatment?

Before treatment you will be asked a few simple questions relating to your health which is held in strict confidence. Reiki is carried out with the recipient fully clothed. Spectacles, watch and shoes are the only items which need to be removed during treatment.

Treatment is carried out with closed eyes and silence (except for relaxing music). The practitioner will place their hands either on or above the recipient's body.

Very often a feeling or warmth can be felt from the practitioners hands. Some people go into such a relaxed state that they feel they have only been receiving treatment for a few minutes whereas in fact a full treatment usually takes approximately an hour.

As Reiki is said to help the body eliminate toxins it is recommended that you drink plenty of water after a treatment to help this process.

What ailments Reiki can help with?

Reiki is so gentle that it can be used to help almost any illness. This can range from the physical to psychological. It has been known to help with arthritis, terminal illness, stress, menopausal problems, back pain, migraine, asthma and much more.

After surgery Reiki is said to be beneficial as it is thought to promote healing.

Because Reiki is so gentle it is safe for the elderly, pregnant women, children and animals. Reiki can be used safely in conjunction with any other medical treatments. Treatments aim to bring balance and harmony to the physical body, helping any emotional or spiritual disorders at the same time.
